Best Ways to Invest in Gold and Silver

With our economy all but in the toilet, many people are looking to put what money they have into gold and silver. There are a number of ways that you can do this.

The first way is to invest in a gold or silver mine. Of course, this is done by buying stock in that mine. There is some downside to that as you may be buying into a large, well established and profitable mine or a very small unexplored mine. Also, you may not have a way of knowing which one you are getting. Other things that need to be considered are the costs involved in the mining process such as the cost to extract the ore from the mine.

ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) is another way to invest in gold and silver. With an ETF you can track what the mining companies are doing. Investors can move in and out of gold and silver like they do with stocks. In some instances, they can make a lot of money and in others not so much.

You can also invest in gold and silver futures. The World Council says, “Futures prices are determined by the market’s perception of what the carrying costs - including the interest costs of borrowing gold plus insurance and storage charges - ought to be at any one time. The futures price is usually higher than the spot price for gold”.

Probably the best way to invest in gold and silver is in bars, coins or bullion. This takes all the worry out of the transactions. Investing in coins especially can be quite interesting because the coins can be worth more than the actual metal weight due to rarity. There are advantages and disadvantages to each of these ways to invest. Check them out, study each one and then make your determination as to where and how you want to invest in gold and silver.

Most Valuable Coins

These are rare and valuable coins that you may already have or that you may get back in your pocket change. The 1943 copper penny was made during the war when there were no copper pennies being made. During that time, pennies were made from zinc-coated steel. At that time, copper was needed for the war. This can be worth over $200,000.

The next one is a 1982 dime with no "P" on it. Before 1980, the dimes minted in Philadelphia did not have a mint mark. In 1980, they began to stamp a small "p" on the dimes minted in Philadelphia; however, an error occurred and a small number of dimes were minted without the "p" on them.

In 1955, there was a double die penny that can now be worth over $1000. About 24,000 double die pennies were made. You can spot this if you see doubling of letters and numbers on this coin.

The "New York" quarter was struck in 2001-P. A goof in production kept the coin in the chamber and it was struck an extra time. You can see this, as the image is off center and it doubles the "Washington" and the Statue of Liberty. This has a value of up to $3000.

In 1964, silver dimes were discontinued and in 1965, they were made from copper and nickel. However, in 1965, someone goofed and a silver dime was minted. Only a few were made. Check the edge of your 1965 dimes. If it is shiny and silver edged, then you have a very rare dime worth over $9000. If it has a brown strip around the edge, then is it a common copper/nickel coin. Good luck in locating one of these rare and valuable coins.
