Are Old Coins Worth More

Are old coins worth more because they are old or because they are rare? That is a question that many people who saved old coins or are given old coins from friends and relatives ask. As the old saying goes, "one man's trash is another man's treasure." This has people hanging on to old coins to wait for the right time to cash in.

Most old coins are not valuable because they are produced for populations of millions of people and are not thrown away. Some silver coins have been melted down for the metal. There are also more coins in circulation than there are coin collectors because coin collecting is a slow and tedious task. Most coin collectors are not wealthy they are just average people with a hobby of collecting coins. The news media can, by reporting the huge amount of money paid for an old coin, cause the public to speculate about how much a coin is worth.

There have been cases where the price of an old coin can be manipulated by a few collectors. By having either a public or private auction and allowing the press to report the final sale price, sometimes people can get ripped off. Are old coins worth more? The truth is that is usually on a case by case basis. In many cases, an older coin may be worth more but only if it is rare. Sometimes an older coin can have no more value than a modern day penny.
