Coin collecting is probably one of the oldest hobbies still around today. There are many different varieties of coins bought and sold by collectors and investors all around the world; however, the most valuable of the lot are still the antique coins. Of these coins gold carries the most value with the least amount of risk. In general, older or antique coins are the most valuable. This is because these coins become more collectible due to being more rare than modern coins.
Most collectors start their collection of antique coins by selecting a particular country or period of time. This will enable them to become more educated in determining the value of the coins that they collect. Self education is a must for antique and rare coin collectors. Dealers don’t typically offer free valuations and of course they are looking to buy the coins at the lowest possible price. Having each of your coins appraised by an experienced professional can be quite costly especially if it is determined that the coins are worthless. However, if you determine that you may have a valuable coin it is worth the expense of an appraisal to make sure you get what the coin is worth on a sale.
The best defense is to start off with a small collection and learn as much as you can about the coin to get an idea of its worth. An excellent resource is your local public library. They have many books on old coins and can help guide you to books and coin catalogs that will be helpful in valuing the coins. Additionally, you will be able to educate yourself on how to identify the important characteristics of the coins to be sure the coins you buy are authentic. You will also want to know how to identify and preserve the condition of the coins. Excessive cleaning of an antique coin can actually decrease its value.
