The Most Valuable Coins in the World

Some of the most valuable coins in the world are mistakes made by the mint and highly sought after by collectors. Most collectors are after coins from the United States as they were made with gold, silver and copper which also adds value to the coins. The more valuable coins are minted with errors, only in circulation for a brief time or historical coins. Proof sets are also collector items because they have never been touched by the bare hands. The condition and rarity of the coin adds value to a coin.

Currently the 1933 Double Eagles coin is the most valuable coin in the world selling for over $6,600,000! These coins were released during the great depression and Franklin Roosevelt ordered them to be smelted. However, there are still several in the world to be found. The 1913 V nickel was recently sold for $3,000,000 which makes it the most expensive 5 cent coin in the world. The most expensive dime is the 1894-S Barber Dime valued at $1,900,000.

Some rare but valuable coins that the common collector might have or be able to find would be the 1943 copper penny which has an estimated value of $200,000. As the war started they stopped making copper pennies, they started making pennies with steel. There are about 40 still in existence. The 1965 silver dime is estimated at $9000. The production of silver dimes was discontinued in 1964, however a few 1965 silver coins are still in circulation. What valuable coin do you have in your coin jar?
