National Park Quarters

A new series of quarter dollar coins will begin to be minted and released by the United States Treasury beginning in 2010. This series will mint five new designs per year for 11 years, and they will feature on the reverse side of each issue a different national park or national site from each state in US territory as well as the District of Columbia. The secretary of treasury has the option to extend this series for a second cycle. If he chooses to do so, it would then feature an additional national park or site from each state.

The site and design selections for each area will involve the chief executive of each host jurisdiction, the secretary of the interior, The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, and the various federal departments that are responsible for the oversight of each of these sites. The final decision for each site selected and each design selected for that site will be made by the secretary of the treasury.

It has been suggested by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee to replace the image of George Washington with that of Theodore Roosevelt on this series of quarter dollars. It is due to his devotion to conservation and protection of our national parks and national sites that they feel it would be fitting to have the image of Theodore Roosevelt on the front of this series. Roosevelt set aside massive amounts of land amounting to 42 million acres of national forests and over 50 national wildlife refuges. However, it will be a difficult decision to make since the image of George Washington has been on the quarter dollar coin since 1932.
