Silver dollars are one of the noticeable coins among avid coin collectors. Coins that are rare and uncirculated are a prize for any coin collector. LaVere Redfield, was a man who had the treasure coin collectors loved to see.
Redfield was also known as the junk man because of his distinct way of saving different things including his money. Redfield purchased stocks less liked by most after the market crash in the early 30’s. Redfield was a man like so many in his time that did not trust the government or any financial system. Instead of money in the bank he put his money in the bags. His mistrust in the system led him in a different direction, jail at one time because of the IRS and him not being able to trust. Redfield would not deposit money in banks because of his mistrust. He would take his money and get silver dollars, and with his money that meant bags of coins. He just put it in his house until he got all of it stolen. He finally decided to hide the bags of coins in a secret hiding place behind a wall and then left it there. It was later found by the IRS after his passing in 1974.
Redfield was a very wealthy man due to his shrewd investments and unique saving skills. After his passing in 1974 there was a lot of uncirculated Morgan Silver Dollars found in the secret hiding place. A great find for coin collectors every where, but at a great loss.
