A Buyer's Guide to Coins

There are many things to remember when buying coins. There are coins that are made from different metals and coins that are from different countries. Knowing where to get the coins is always an advantage to the coin collector or buyer. Knowing what the coin's worth is may also be a plus when purchasing.

The first step in coin buying is knowing who to buy from. The best place to purchase coins from is a local dealer. The local dealer should have communication with wholesalers that can get the coins that you may want. It is important to know how things work behind the scenes. Lack of knowledge can cause coin buyers to make the biggest mistakes. Understand that the coin dealer has a different perspective on what he or she should buy the coins for to sell to you. Knowing what the value is on the coin you are purchasing is crucial. "The Coin Dealer Newsletter" is a paper that tells the bid and asking value on every major coin and mint in the United States of America. The bid is the price that the dealers pay for the coins and the asking price is what dealers will sell the coins for. The profit margin is the difference between the two.

Be sure to know your coins. There are base metal coins, which means any coin that is not made of gold, silver, or platinum. There are also bag marked coins, which have scratches and abrasions left on coins from being knocked around in a bag. Mostly importantly, do your research.
