Finding Coins in Circulation

Who knew you could find treasure in the couch cushions, or in the car, or among your laundry quarters? Some coins can be pretty valuable. Do you hoard coins in a jar, but better still, does your Mom or Grandma? They'll remember the bicentennial quarters and Kennedy half dollars. In 1976, the bicentennial quarters were everywhere, but they're hard to find these days. The 1999 emergence of the 50 state quarters program seemed to eclipse them. It's worth looking around. You may have seen pre-1960 Jefferson nickels. They can be worth more than a nickel. They don't make silver dimes or silver quarters anymore, but you could be on the lookout. This year, around 24 billion coins will be produced.

There are several rare coins in circulation. In 1955, 20,000 pennies were hit twice by the stamping machine. They're called double-die coins. One sold on eBay this year for $1,100. Again, more coins are hoarded than are in circulation. Several 1982 Roosevelt dimes were printed without the P, D, or S usually shown above the date. This was caused by an error in the die. They're worth $250, and the number minted is unknown.

How are you to find potentially rare coins? Let's approach this simply. Go through your pocket change, and don't forget the couch. Get change from vending machines; they have nothing but change! Put a few dollar bills in and see what you get after your Snickers. Banks are a good place for those half dollars and dollar coins and unusual coins often show up in rolls. Just keep your eyes open. Treasure could be all around you.
