Are Old Coins Worth More?

Is a coin worth a lot just because it is old? No, but don’t stop looking for them. There are very valuable coins still circulating. Just because a coin is old does not guarantee that it is valuable. Coins only a few years old can be worth more than coins hundreds of years old. Coin collectors have been trying for years to determine what exactly makes a coin valuable and there are many things that determine the value of a coin. These aspects include age of course, what it is made of, where it was made, and how many were made. When you ask about the value of a coin, you are stepping into a maze. Here are some facts about coin value.

A coins value is determined by several key factors and a grading system is used to help rate key features of the coin. This rating system consists of well over a dozen levels of grading. The grading system weighs several factors including condition, rarity, mintage, composition and yes, age. Unless you are a coin collector, the only coins you will be looking into are U.S. coins. That makes it a lot easier to discover if you have a pocket full of treasures, or lunch money. The most obvious coins are gold and silver ones. They are easy to spot and worth a bundle. Then you get into tricky ones, the rare coins. If a coin is two-years-old, but only 5,000 were made, then you have a gem. If it is 2,000-years-old, but a tremendous amount were minted, it’s not worth much at all.

To figure out what it is worth, requires you become a detective. If you are going to let somebody else determine the worth for you, be very careful. Coin collecting is a cutthroat business and you may lose out if you are not careful.
