The Value of Old Coins

When it comes to coin collecting, the age of a coin does not have as much influence on the value of the coin as the condition of the coin, as well as the number of coins that were minted that year. The main thing that decides what a coin is worth is how the coin is graded. Coins are graded in steps that range from poor to extra fine. The higher they are graded, the more the coin will be worth to a collector.

Another thing that influences the price of a collectible coin is supply and demand. If only a few coins were minted in a particular year and most of them are in the hands of collectors that do not want to sell them, then the price of the coin will go up. If there is an over abundance of a coin, the price will go down.

Coins in poor condition, especially those where you cannot read the date, are usually not that valuable. Additionally, if is dented, the same applies. Usually in these cases, the coin is worth no more than face value, unless it is made of silver or gold. In that case, it would be worth the going rate for the metal that it is made of.

With the increase in the prices of all metals over the last year, all coins are worth more than their face value. The silver coins minted before 1964 have a higher value as far as precious metal value is concerned. This is because they contain more silver than the coins minted from 1965 to the present.
