If you are an auction goer, then you should know a few things to make sure that what you are buying is what they say it is. You can do this by checking them out and make sure they are not here today and gone tomorrow.
If you are a true blue auction person, then you probably visit only the best auction houses in town. Regular attendees are often allowed to place a bid before the auction even starts, and if it sells for more, then you usually lose out. At the higher class auctions, however, those who place a silent bid and get outbid get the difference of what the item sold from what they offered.
Most auction houses are safe and honest. In fact, they will even tell you if an item has a crack or has been refinished. They give you ample time to look the items over before they begin the auction. They always tell you beforehand that once you have bought it, it belongs to you and you are responsible for it. They do not accept any returns or refunds, so you should make very sure of what you are bidding on and how high you want to go before the auction starts. A good way to do this is to take a pen and paper with you and mark down the item and how high of a price you are willing to pay. If you get something cheaper than you had written, then you're ahead of the game.
