Are Old Coins Worth More?

From ancient coins dating back to a thousand years or more to the last century, the world of coin collecting has inspired many coins to be highly sought after treasures. Information available today is plentiful in the grading and pricing of old coins as a hobby or as an investment.

It seems the older the coin, the pricier it should be, but that is not the case for all coins. The rarity of a coin is what makes it valuable, more so than its condition or age. Obviously, the better the condition, the higher the value, but a worn rare coin will still be worth more than a mint common coin.

Grading on a coin can have significant variations in obtaining the pricing and marketability of each piece. This raises the prices because the older, better condition coins are in more demand, therefore raising the value of better grade older coins.

For more specific pricing and values, there are numerous books that tell you how to grade and determine the condition of each coin. Ranging from 1 cent pieces to coins from the 19th century, these guides can tell you the composition of the coins, and even what city they were minted in.

While as a rule value is defined most by scarcity, there are some occasions where a particular collector will pay a higher price for a specific coin simply because they need it to complete a series, or they specialize in collecting certain types of coins.
