How do you find it if they are worth anything? First you have find out what kind of coin they are. Are they commemorative coins? If they are from United states, then you know they are pennies, dimes, nickels, quarter, half dollars and silver dollars. But what if they are from another country? How do you find out what they are, when they were made, and if they are worth anything?
There is an actual list for U.S. coins called the U.S. Old Coin Identification Chart, and there is a book you can get that is called The U.S. Coin Redbook.
The U.S. Old Coins Identification chart actually has pictures of the coin and the value of some of them listed, for example, the Jefferson nickel value depends on the year it was minted, 1938 is worth 30 cents while 1938-D is worth 90 cents, and almost any one minted after 1954 is worth the face value only.
Since the influx of the information on the internet, you can find anything you need to know about your old coins. The worth of the coins not only depends on where they are from or when they were minted, but it also depends on what they are made of and how many were made. That’s where commemorative coins come in. Even though their spending value is nil, they still become worth more to collectors each year because of the limited amount that were made.
You should also be aware that the U.S. Treasury department will only pay face value for coins, no matter when they were minted or how valuable they may have become.
