Someone who collects coins is obviously a coin collector. However, a numismatist is someone who studies money including paper money and other rates of exchange within various cultures. Both are closely related and you may be some of both.

This activity keeps you involved with other people and gives one a sense of purpose. Some collectors are investment oriented and may be saving for retirement or for a child's college fund. Others may want to document their family history via a coin collection and would bequeath it to a special relative. History buffs are often coin collectors.
Some coin collectors are fascinated by a specific civilization or era of history. Other are collecting coins for all 50 US states being minted and circulated presently. Gold and silver coins may be the primary target of some while others are looking for a specific coin. There are any number of books on the subject and the Internet provides a ton of info on the subject as well.
