2000 Years of Solidarity

The buffalo nickel is one of the most popular coins to have ever been minted. The design was so popular that they later made commemorative dollars with the same design.

The buffalo nickel was produced from 1913 to 1938. It was minted in San Francisco, Denver and Philadelphia, and will have a D, S, or no mint mark so that you will know where it was made. In 1922, 1932 and 1933 they did not make any buffalo nickels. In 1922 it was because they were concentrating on making the silver dollar. During the years of 1932 and 1933 they did not make any because of the depression.

In 1913 they had the buffalo standing on a mound with the date on it. When they noticed that the date was wearing off, they changed the design. They made the buffalo stand on a flat line with the date underneath it. That made 6 different mints for the collectors that year.

During the year 1938 you may find a rare coin that is dated 1938/7-D. This is because they used a redated 1937 die, and it caused an overdate. James Earle Fraser designed the buffalo nickel. He used a buffalo named Black Diamond from the New York City’s Central Park Zoo as a model for the buffalo.

On the opposite side is a Native American chief. He used 3 different chiefs as models for the buffalo nickel. He then combined them and used features form each one of them. The three chiefs he used were believed to be Iron Tail, Two Moons and Big Tree.
