Coin Collecting-Tips for the Beginner

What an exciting new adventure to become a numismatist (a coin collector). Coin collecting is an excellent hobby, and an investment that can be started with a small amount of research and just a small amount of money.

To begin your research visit your local library; there are a large number of coin collecting books available. You can also use the internet or simply visit a coin dealer and ask your questions. Decide on a focus area of what types of coins interest you the most or just jump into the mainstream. Coins can be found with themes such as flowers, countries, horses, eras or denominations just to name a few. You can choose a theme from the vast amount of options available from your research or simply begin with something you just like.

There are a few items to consider purchasing to help you get started. A magnifying glass is a definite must. Also some protector sleeves and cylindrical coin holders will help to protect, as well as display, your collection.

Handling and appearance are the last two tips for the beginner. Always hold your coin by the edges or some prefer to wear gloves to prevent the transfer of any dirt and oils from your own hands. While some coins will look dirty, remember not to wash them as this can actually cause a loss in value.

Coin collecting can be not only a fun and exciting hobby, but also an investment that can be handed down for generations.
