Valuable Old Coins

One of the oldest hobbies in the world is coin collecting. Rare and valuable coins are popular collector coins. The value of old or rare coins depends on the condition of the coin, the mintage, and the rarity of it.

There is one coin that can be very valuable depending on what it is made of and when it was made. This coin is the 1943 penny. A standard copper penny made in 1943 is extremely rare. It is so rare that it is worth between sixty and ninety-five thousand dollars if it is un-circulated. A circulated penny of this type is worth between twenty and forty thousand dollars. On the other hand, if a 1943 penny is made of steel, it is worth much less. An un-circulated 1943 steel penny with zinc plating is only valued at fifty cents to one dollar. You can determine what these pennies are made of by using a magnet to see if they are steel of copper.

Another valuable coin that can be found in common pocket change is the 1969-S Lincoln cent with a doubled die obverse. This coin is worth around thirty-five thousand dollars. To properly identify this coin, look for the clear doubling of the observe. The mint mark will not be doubled. This is because the observe and the mint mark are punched in separate dies. Most early specimens were collected by the Secret Service. Counterfeits are common, however they usually have an incorrect mint mark.
